Hamlet Update

Photobucket
The Royal Shakespeare Company have announced that David Tennant will not be returning to his role of Hamlet, in the production of the play of that name, until Christmas, at least. David has got a back injury, and because of this, has pulled out of performances since Monday. He is having back surgery, which will take a long time. But, to make his full recovery, they decided that it was the best thing for him to do. His understudy, Edward Bennett (who normally plays Laertes in the production) will be taking the role until he returns. Does this mean that there will be empty seats? Well, yes, because some families have been reported to have not gone, as they only wanted to see David, but they do not get refunds. But now rumours are spreading that he may not be able to continue with specials next year, because of this, so what do you think will happen? We all hoped we'd have him until 2010...

No Tennant In Hamlet Tonight

Photobucket
The production of Hamlet, this year, moves to London's Novello Theatre, after it's run at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford. Unfortunately, for everyone who has bought tickets, they won't be seeing David Tennant play the lead role in the performance tonight. David has got a back injury, and because of this, pulled out of last night's show as well as tonight's. To make his full recovery, they decided that it was the best thing for him to do. We do not know yet when he will be returning, but it should be tomorrow, and if not, not much later tha that at all. His understudy, Edward Bennett (who normally plays Laertes in the production) will take the role tonight, until David is fully ready to perform once more.

TV Times Awards

Photobucket
The TV Times has been running, like previous years, their annual awards, which take many different factors off television, and judge how good they are, with people voting in on their favourite on several different topics. 'Who' has won two different awards. From tradition, as it now seems, Doctor Who has taken away the prize for 'Best TV Show', which is fantastic! Other nominees for this category include Coronation Street, EastEnders, Strictly Come Dancing and The X Factor. David Tennant has won the award for 'Sexiest Male', with close competition from Rob James-Collier, Scott Maslen, John Barrowman (another star of Doctor Who, Captain Jack) and Robert Kazinksy. He also came in second place as best actor, which Sir David Jason won. Well Done!

Einstein and Eddington Today

Today the new BBC film will be airing on BBC Two, named Einstein and Eddington. This is a little bit off the topic of Doctor Who, but there hasn't been a lot of news recently. David Tennant plays the second main role in the story, Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington, and Andy Serkis (who is at this time appearing in Little Dorrit with Freema Agyeman, Eve Myles and Russel Tovey) plays Albert Einstein. The film will be broadcast today at 9:10pm to 10:40pm tonight, therefore being one and a half hours long on BBC Two. It is directed by Philip Martin and written by Peter Moffat. Other stars in Einstein And Eddington include Jim Broadbent, Lucy Cohu, Jodhi May and Rebecca Hall. Below you can read the synopsis of the story;

Albert Einstein (Serkis) spent years working on his General Theory of Relativity, which threatened to overturn two centuries of Newtonian certainty and the foundations of British science. Arthur Eddington (Tennant) was a prominent British astrophysicist who, as a Quaker, believed that "truth knows no boundaries" and bravely championed Einstein’s theories while Britain rejected anything German.
In 1919, Eddington undertook an expedition to Africa to photograph light bending round the sun during an eclipse. These photographs not only proved the theory to be correct, but turned Einstein into a worldwide superstar.
Will you be watching today?

The One, The Only And The Best...

Earlier tonight as part of the Children In Need, the first two minutes of this year's Christmas Special, The Next Doctor, was broadcast as a world-wide exclusive on the show. The Doctor arrived in Victorian England, on 24th December 1851, and visited a Christmassy market. He asked a boy the date, and then the year, to which the boy replied 'You thick or something?'. He heard a woman's voice calling for the Doctor, so he presumed it was him, so ran off towards the voice. He found a girl called Rosita, and she was confused as he said that he was the Doctor, when Rosita knew a different one. David Morrissey's Doctor runs on, claiming to be him as well. Morrissey's Doctor tells Rosita to go back to the Tardis, after asking for the sonic screwdriver. Tennant's Doctor also pulls out his sonic screwdriver and they are both menaced by a new terrifying Cybershade, in which the other Doctor says 'Oh, that's new!' Apart from David Morrissey's one was an actual screwdriver and they both shout Allons-Y, after which both Doctors give their other selves strange look. It was shown at around 9pm and just again recently just after 11:50pm. The preview is approximately 2 minutes and 20 seconds long, and you can view it below;

All Change...

The picture above was made by me
Well, this actually happens to be a number of posts I could have done, but I've combined them, as they are all, in a matter of speaking related. I'm just thinking on the topic of 2010. To be honest, everything will be completely new and different.
We have Russell T. Davies leaving, the amazing head-writer of Doctor Who, who has provided us over these four years with scary and action action-packed to sad and emotional scripts. Producer Phil Collinson left a while ago, to move to Manchester, and had been at the very heart of the show since 2005. He will not be producing the specials. Instead, we have Tracie Simpson and Nikki Smith, and then Piers Wenger for the fifth series. Then we also have Julie Gardner, moving on after 2009, who has also been on the team for the whole of the new series.
The biggest change is David Tennant, the tenth Doctor. That's all I can really say about him really, because you all know the sad news. So, who will be the next Doctor? The answer to the question everybody want to know is... we don't know! Rumours have been flying around over the internet. Some good suggestions, but others are just ridiculous. Even people who have been on the show before! James Nesbitt, one of the actors speculated to take the role in 2010, has recently denied the rumour, saying that it would be "career suicide to step into the shoes of Tennant". It is true in fact, that Doctor Who does change your life, and that is partly why David Tennant wanted to leave. It's not that he actually wants to leave, it's that the producers will be having to pull him away from the Tardis, when he reaches the age of 90 or so!
More recently, the Sun have published an article, saying that the show might have a black Doctor, a completely new direction to go in! They said that the BBC was near the stage of signing Colin Salmon, Doctor Moon in the Library two-parter this year, and more renowned for his role in the James Bond films. Colin has not yet announced that he will or won't, but seeing as only the Sun have published the news, it seems very, very unlikely. More so, as the BBC have also denied it. (they must get very fed up with the Sun). But not so unlikely of a black Doctor.
The BBC have denied that the new Doctor will be announced on Children in Need this Friday, after Terry Wogan's remark that he might be. Of course, he was most likely just fibbing to see how many sources would pick up on the story, and it worked! Instead, they will announce the casting early next year.
Another big change will be Murray Gold. This has not been officially confirmed yet, but the outstanding composer may be leaving the show after the specials next year! He has provided us with the best music in the universe for the dazzling show, but will the show suffer with a new composer? Yes, the show is about change, but it seems that nearly everything is changing, apart from we know the Doctor will be zooming round the universe in his little blue box, and the show may still be called Doctor Who. And God knows who the next companion will be...
Hopefully new showrunner, Steven Moffat, will have a positive contribution to the show, and take it into a fantastic new direction...

Tennant Coverage; Breakfast Video & Billie for Doctor?

On Monday, David Tennant featured on the BBC Breakfast show, after the suprise announcement of his departure, during the National Television Awards ceremony, last Wednesday. He talks about various different things, the main one being his leaving from the show, along with his role in the new drama, Einstein and Eddington, and who he thinks should replace the Doctor in 2010. One of the things that was mentioned, though, on the subject of the new Doctor, they suggested Billie Piper to play him next, and if it was a good idea, to which David replied 'Why Not?!' Of course, many sources like newpapers and websites, have picked up on the story, like they usually do, making it into another big event, but not as much so as on the NTA awards speech. He was then asked whether a female could play the Doctor, to which he relied with the same comment. Of course, many fans are thinking this a very bad idea, but David says that anyone could take the role, and develop it in the way they want to. Billie Piper has also played the Doctor's companion, Rose Tyler, so unless there is some great explanation for it, or computer-generate a different head on top of Billie's, this is very unlikely to happen! You can see the full interview below, in a video;

Tennant Coverage; Breakfast For David

The BBC have revealed that tenth Doctor, David Tennant, will be appearing on their Breakfast show on Monday. The actor, who recently revealed that he will be handing over the Tardis keys at te end of next year, has just won the award for Outstanding Drama Performance at the National Television Awards, on Wednesday. Tennant will be discussing his decision to leave the show this coming Monday, the 3rd, just after 8:30 in the morning. This interview will follow on from various videos and articles made after Wednesday. But it's not over for David yet, as we still have to look forward to this year's Christmas Special, The Next Doctor, and then another four hour-long specials after that.

Tennant Coverage; The Speech

Below is the video which shows the acceptance speech made by David Tennant in the National Television Awards. He was not there on the night, and so the speech was made in an interval during a performance of Hamlet, in Stratford, but, as you know, he said that he would be leaving the show. Catherine Tate picked up the award for him, and had a little chat to him! You can see all this below in the video, but don't cry! David tried not too!

A Good Labour For David

Following the success of David Tennant's leading role in Hamlet this Summer, at the same time, he has been taking part in a different Shakespeare production. The play is Love's Labour's Lost (Not to be confused with Love's Labour's Won), and David Tennant plays one of four lords who live to regret taking a vow of sexual abstinence. Not a major role perhaps, but at least the play has become critical hit. Possibly one of the reasons David does not have a larger role in this could be because of the role of Hamlet. In this play, he keeps his original Scottish accent, in which he has hidden in Doctor Who and Hamlet. A quote from the article says;
"According to BBC arts correspondent Razia Iqbal, Tennant began rehearsals for Love's Labour's Lost 'almost immediately' after Hamlet opened in August. 'The RSC may have another hit on their hands, which is surprising given the play is Shakespeare's most forgettable early comedy,' she said."
The RSC last had the play staged in 1993 and was made into a movie with director Kenneth Branagh in 2000, plus after that there was a performance of it in the Globe Theatre in LondonJust like Hamlet, the performances will last until the 15th of November this year, and Hamlet will then be moving across to London. Have you or will you be seeing the play?
